This is a favorite shot of mine shot in the Allagash Wilderness, Maine. Toward the evening, moose come out of the woods to eat. They love to eat the lush grass that is growing in the lakes and rivers which is what this moose is doing. They wade out until they find a nice patch of grass and then duck their heads under to pull it up. When they bring their heads up there is a rush of water that cascades over their heads and ears. This is the moment captured here. This rush of water is also what enables me to find where they are feeding. At this time of day it is very quiet, if you paddle out into a likely area (in my kayak) you can stop and listen for this water rush and it will guide you to a feeding area and at least one moose, sometimes more. Getting close to them is the next trick…
The moose can be very sensitive to movement so the trick is very simple. Don’t move when their head is out of the water. Wait for them to dip below the surface and then you can paddle toward them. As soon as they bring their head up, stop. This shot was taken with a Canon 10D and a 70-200mm lens.
